Three Cups Of Tea/

This book is a must read. Even thinking about it makes my emotions so evoked.

It tells the true story of a strong will, courage, compassion and kindness.

Written by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Ralin, it follows closely the journey of the American Greg Mortenson, which real life adventure begins with a failure attempt to climb K2 summit in honor of his sister Krista who he had recently lost. Unable to navigate his way back to the camp he gets lost and at the end of his surviving strength a ray of rescue appears in front of his eyes in the shape of village men. He is saved and this salvation turns his path in a completely different, but significantly meaningful and humanistic direction.

I don’t wish to steal your relish while reading, so I won’t tell you anymore of the story. But if you let me, I would like to depict the impact Three Cups of Tea has on me...

This remarkable book is a word of Peace. But Peace beyond world models speech, billionaire charities or United Nations deeds. This is one man’s mission to promote peace in the most desolated and remote regions on Earth, these of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

From the beginning of the book to the end Greg Mortenson remains as a very modest, but completely dedicated on children’s education being. Guided by his promise and the image of countless, full of hope innocent eyes, he goes far beyond our definitions about altruism, generosity, loyalty and strong belief.

Despite the fact the author (David Oliver Ralin) doesn’t write much about Greg’s feelings and emotions, I can’t for a second feel affected, because I have the sensation that this is what Greg’s will is - no attention to his personality, but only to his humanitarian deeds.

This splendid reading describes in details about the Muslim culture and traditions in the regions Mortenson works, his relationships with the local people and the poor promises and lost hope American government gave to their nation. All his projects are funded by contributions from his books (Three Cups of Tea, Stones Into Schools), his speeches and his readers good-will donations.

It is a shame for the current American president Obama to hold a Noble Peace Prize for ending a killing and destroying war in Iraq and starting it in Afghanistan.

The real American hero is this humble man from the book, who gained Peace among the Muslims with his love, compassion and respect for the Islamic culture.

Poetry in the underground

Here is another thing that touched me and found a place in my thoughts.
I got this MetroCard in New York City last fall when I did my daily trip to China Town. When I sat in the underground train, besides the German-Chinese tourist with whom we exchanged a few nice words and lots of smiles, there wasn't anything else interesting to look at or do, so I was flapping this card in my hands until I saw there was something more than a sentence written in the back of it. When I brought all my attention to the small letters I could actually read a piece of a beautiful poetry which of course captured immediately my mind and took it to my dreamlands. This little surprise in my hands instantly awoke my imagination and guided my observations of the place I was to a completely different direction.
And now let me quote what I found in the back...

"My heart burns in flames of sorrow
Sparks and smoke rise turning to the sky
Within me, the heart has taken fire like a candle
My body, whirling, is a lighthouse illuminated by your image"

written by: Mihri Khatun (15th-century female Turkish poet) Ottoman Lyric Poetry

I totally wonder now how come in the classes of Theory of Literature or Literature at the University we never discussed anything about Ottoman Lyric Poetry, indeed we were five hundred years part of it!
It seems that recently I have been impressed a few times from Ottoman Culture, where some people would strongly argue that there is no such thing.
Anyways, I still have a little hope that all MetroCards come with small poetry notes in the back. I remember two years ago I read somewhere that in Paris at almost all metro stations have been installed book machines and for the price of 2 euro you can by a pocket size classic novel. I found this pretty impressive, because I fully support the idea that culture and art have to be everywhere around us to brighten our minds and enrich our souls.

Wildbirds&Peacedrums

This is how I met them.
I am very critical for song covers, especially Bjork's one. I have never liked any singer trying to re-sing her songs, but this one is an absolute killer! I was totally addicted. They showed not only a great performance, but their own personal flavor. I wish I could describe better how much I love it! :)

C.R.A.Z.Y.

Here is another wave of French :)
Two nights ago I was just on a way to sink in the land of dreams when Kostas started this movie just to check what is it about. We both were captured instantly.
C.R.A.Z.Y. tells a story about a conservative father and a religious mother who are raising their five sons through three decades in Quebec, Canada. The movie starts with Zac's birth in the 1960, the second youngest in the family and follows closely his own life journey to determine his own sexuality and seek for happiness. This is how much I will tell you about the story.
C.R.A.Z.Y. is a brilliant made movie, I loved every small detail of it, from soundtrack to room decoration, speech and character images. Even the title of the movie is derived from the initials of five brothers.
In my opinion it blows most of US high budget movies!

Pink Martini - Sympathique

Speaking of French, here is another piece of this adorable language. I used to listen to this song a lot last summer. Even now, it still brings me a good mood :) Enjoy it!

J'adore cette chanson! :)

P.S. Que pensez-vous de mon français? Écrivez, s'il vous plaît!

I would like to present you Ultimate French by Living Language. This is a self-learning language program. It has a great source of grammar, vocabulary and exercises. I would recommend it to every beginner who wants to discover more than a language - after every lesson there are cultural notes and highlights on society and lifestyle. It contains 40 lessons with dialogues using everyday language, the grammar explanations are very clear and of course plenty of exercises. I have passed only 24 lessons so far and I can easily write the text above :)

Simplicity

The following piece of poetry came into my mind last winter. It is the first and only one work yet I have written in English.
For different reasons I had a lot of free time and I used to spend it hiking in the closest hill. I had one very favorite spot where I loved to go and just stay, listen and watch the surrounding nature. It made me feel relaxed and pleased to be part of it. Sometimes I want to escape from mankind and be on a place where no human would go.
Both pictures above are from my winter spot.

Simplicity

It's winter.
I walk in the forest and leave tiny footprints behind.
I trample the deep powder and sing a song.
Wind in my ears whispers the sacred lyrics.
I wave my hand to the cold and ask it to come back later
Then I see sun smiling nicely at me
This confused allegory takes me to my secret spot.
Here is the big pine tree – my only one best friend
The generous mute listener to my thoughts and dreams...

Today I will reveal a story, one from the human race
How fondly they tried to concor the Universe's space
Blinded by their greed they dared to stand against Mother Earth
And made merciless effort, never worth

This disillusioment rapes constantly my soul
So I always run away seeking for a dole
Here in the muteness of the immense forest
I find a peace of mind, tranquility of a life very modest
